| Organization The UCLA Laboratory of Neuro Imaging (wwwLONIuclaedu httpwwwloniuclaedu ) is a leader in the fields of computational neuroscience image computing and bioinformatics The major foci of our national and international collaborations are to develop multiresolution multimodal and multiscale computational brain atlases and models of brain structure and function The group maintains a large 4800+ core HPC cluster and petabytescale online and archival storage It also provides web services and computing resources for hundreds of researchers and collaborators both at UCLA and worldwide Description Under general supervision of the lab director this individual will act as one of the Information Technology Managers at LONI Responsibilities include all technical aspects of operations and strategic planning the maintenance and support of LONIrsquos supercomputing and data centers and the cultivation of relationships with academic and commercial partners General responsibilities include management of LONIrsquos IT infrastructure including computational storage network and AV resources management of LONIrsquos facility and physical plant operations alignment of LONIrsquos functional IT groups management of LONIrsquos systems roadmap and upgrade direction in accordance with the labrsquos scientific and strategic goals vendor management including the development of relationships with key industry partner in order to obtain optimal priceperformance combinations from vendors Specific duties include Serve as Manager of Network Operations Provide leadership and guidance for development of specific aspects of the IT architecture working in partnership with faculty functional IT managers collaborators and vendors while ensuring alignment with the overall laboratory strategy and vision Lead the definition and implementation of architectural governance ensuring an appropriate mechanism is in place to drive standards creation utilization and enforcement Manage the definition selection implementation and optimization of appropriate IT architecture frameworks processes and tools working in partnership with faculty functional IT managers and vendors If necessary manage the creation and implementation of corrective plans to address technical issues and operational bottlenecks Ensure operational excellence for LONIrsquos three Data Centers including systems availability security capacity planning and configuration management Manage the deployment monitoring maintenance development upgrade support and security of LONIrsquos IT infrastructure including servers workstations networking storage operating systems hardware software and peripherals Manage the laboratoryrsquos procurement of hardware software and services Explore new technologies for growth planning and potential implementation and advise the laboratory Director on bestuse technology decisions and future roadmaps Develop relationships and liaise with key technology vendors industry experts and collaborators on matters of information management and technology Enable and facilitate research through the use of cuttingedge technology Help identify and apply for federal and private funding to continuously upgrade and enhance IT infrastructure Data Center Management Ensure 247 operation of the laboratoryrsquos technical resources Management of LONIrsquos computational environment including 3 Data Centers an immersive 50person visualization theatre multiple computational clusters w 720+ processors 6 mainframes with 238 processors 200 workstations and 700 registered users (department employees and collaborators) Management of LONIrsquos network environment that includes 5 public subnets with 1270 maximum clients and Internet 2 connectivity Management of LONIrsquos storage environment and 2 robotic silos Coordinate hardware problem diagnosis repair and optimization with internal staff and vendor engineers Lead and manage technical systems staff with the following responsibilities Compute cluster and grid administration Maintain a large Linux cluster using ROCKS SUN SGE and similar cluster management toolkits nix systems administration Evaluate install license and configure software packages Design maintain document and support locally developed applications Maintain LONIrsquos installed base of computer programs and software libraries ensure multiplatform interoperability Perform SolarisLinuxIRIX support tasks such as disk administration user account creation and system problem diagnosis debugging and repair Identify track and deploy critical security measures and OS patches Provide end user support Write and deploy applications that facilitate daily lab operations Windows systems administration Maintain and optimize as needed Active Directory Dynamic DNS DHCP VPN and other Windowsbased network services Maintain and optimize as needed the laboratoryrsquos Exchange servers including the addition of new mailboxes troubleshooting email problems and implementing preventive measures against viruses and other malicious email payloads Maintain and optimize as needed LONIrsquos Blackberry and instant messaging services Evaluate install license and configure software packages Perform Windows XP support tasks such as user account creation system problem diagnosis debugging and repair Identify track and deploy critical security measures and OS patches Provide end user support Write and deploy Windows XP and Windows 7 applications that facilitate daily lab operations Network administration Ensure multiplatform interoperability networking and communication Maintain and deploy as necessary networking protocols tools and services including TCPIP OSPF BGPFTP DNS DHCP and email Add new machines as required to existing Solaris Linux IRIX Mac OSX and Windows network Liaise with UCLA networking groups to address any interoperability and security issues Data management Ensure proper storage of the laboratory data including management of online disks and offline robotic silos Ensure proper backup archiving and retrieval of laboratory data Skills BSc in Computer Science or 7+ years experience in high technology operations plus 3+ years experience managing technical staff in scientific or academic arena required MS in Computer Science or equivalent Expert knowledge in highperformance computing including but not exclusive of SMP and distributed computation faulttolerant architectures clustering technology highperformance lowlatency networks and enterprise resource management Technical knowledge in multiple domains including infrastructure data management and application development Knowledge of best practices in these domains Knowledge of emerging technologies and the ability to evaluate and integrate novel technologies with existing systems Ability to develop and implement short and long range strategic plans Strong leadership skills with the ability to use facts and insights to be a forceful yet diplomatic advocate of onersquos point of view Oral and written communication skills to present both technical and nontechnical information clearly and concisely to persons of varying levels of technological expertise Ability to develop and nurture relationships with key industry partners research and academic institutions and scientific experts Expert knowledge of nix Windows and Mac OSX operating systems Expert knowledge of HP Dell SGI Mac and commodity pc hardware Expert knowledge of MSExchange 2010 and Blackberry Enterprise Server Expert experience in shell scripting C C++ Perl Ruby Expert knowledge of networking protocols specifically Cisco IOS and Juniper JUNOS Ability to work effectively in a complex
