Tracking Code 13034 Job Description PLEASE NOTE This is a new fulltime term position through March 31 2014 with possibility of extension Initial consideration will be given to applications received prior to 500 pm MST on Friday January 18 2013 Thereafter applications will be reviewed on an asneeded basis UCAR Community Programs (UCP) Constellation Observing System for Meteorology Ionosphere and Climate (COSMIC) Relocation benefits not provided UCARNCAR will not sponsor a work visa (eg H1B etc) to fill this position BASIC JOB FUNCTION Responsible for the installation maintenance and upgrade of Linux servers and workstations as well as MacIntosh and Windows desktops and laptops for the COSMIC program Procures maintains and troubleshoots Linux servers and workstations Assists users with networking and computer configuration problems on Linux MacIntosh and Windows machines Responsible for maintaining security and security patches for all servers and workstations in COSMIC Responsible for security and operation of a High Availability Linux clustered processing system for the COSMIC mission Responsible for setting up and maintaining Linux systems satisfying computer security standards required by the US Government COSMIC2 mission Participates in rotating satellite instrument operations duties approximately one day per week and one weekend every month and a half Job INCLUDE Takes the lead in developing and implementing a security plan for CDAAC operational systems to meet US Government customer requirements Stays current with computer security issues on all platforms and maintain servers and workstations at the proper patch level Works with Division Property Administrator to maintain equipment records and physical inventory including both hardware and software licenses Assists users with problems including those with printing mail file sharing web service and networking Works with UCAR network (NETS) personnel to ensure proper connectivity for user workstations and servers Converts current scriptbased configuration monitoring and management system for Linux servers to a puppetbased system Performs network backups maintains printers monitors logs and installs software patches and updates Develops automation strategies for these functions Writes scripts and designs procedures to simplify administration monitor servers and notify operators of outages Produces generous documentation Performs as a satellite instrument operator on a rotating daily and periodic weekend basis Monitors satellite and data processing performance Obtains quotes and negotiates with vendors making recommendations for system procurement needs working with Program Purchasing Administrator for procurements REQUIREMENTS INCLUDE Education and Experience Bachelors degree in computer science or computerrelated field and a minimum of four years relevant experience or Masters degree in computer science or computer related field and a minimum of two years relevant experience Knowledge Skills and Abilities Advanced knowledge of and experience in writingmaintaining shell and perl scripts Solid understanding of multiuser operating systems and system components (eg mail printer services network file system network security) Familiar with LinuxUNIX Windows and MacIntosh systems administration practices Good written and oral communication skills Good problem solving (troubleshooting) skills Knowledge of system and network performance tuning methods Knowledge of and experience with installation configuration maintenance of and troubleshooting of networked systemslocal network from multiple vendors Ability to lift 40 pounds and work in confined areas Ability to work occasional late hours or weekends in case of system problems Understanding of hardware and software in complex redundant clustered data centers Makes basic decisions regarding the day to day operation of the COSMIC network and computers Recommends longer term actions to supervisor Quick thinking under pressure is sometimes required Computer network troubleshooting skill Skill and knowledge of computer and network security May require creative approaches and indepth analysis to reach a conclusion Basic mathematical literacy at a college level Additional requirement The successful candidate must be (a) a US citizen (b) lawfully admitted for permanent residence in the United States
