Overview

Lenovo Group Ltd. was formed in 2005 when computer maker Legend Holdings of China acquired International Business Machines Corp.’s Personal Computing Division. With headquarters in China, U.S. operations based in Morrisville, N.C., and offices in 60 countries, Lenovo makes PCs, servers, software and peripherals for customers around the globe.

The company has two main businesses. Its Think Product Group focuses on large corporate customers, while its Idea Product Group caters to consumers and small and medium-sized businesses.

In 2009, Lenovo replaced its CEO and underwent a restructuring which included paring 2,500 employees worldwide and reducing executive compensation by 30% to 50%.

Lenovo re-entered the mobile handset market in 2010 with its own smartphone after re-acquiring Lenovo Mobile Communication Technology Ltd., which it had sold to investors in 2008.

Culture

As one of the largest global technology firms based in China, Lenovo faces cross-cultural challenges among its employees. For example, sports metaphors have been banned from conference calls to avoid confusion, according to the Charlotte Observer. And silkworms were taken off the menu in the company’s Beijing cafeteria.

Lenovo's philanthropic efforts include donating 1% of its pre-tax income to charity. Employees participate in disaster relief through donations.

Recruiting

Lenovo has internal recruiters who first screen candidates by phone. Those who advance to the next stage can expect a phone or on-site interview with a hiring manager. The recruiting process takes between 30 and 90 days.
