Xilinx Inc. makes logic chips that are programmed to perform specific chores in products, such as cell phone base stations, network routers, DVD players and cable modems. The company’s markets include aerospace/defense, automotive, broadcast, consumer, data process/storage, industrial/scientific/medical, wired and wireless. Almost half of its business is from the communications market.

Based in San Jose, Calif. Xilinx has 20,000 customers worldwide and regional headquarters in Dublin and Singapore.

In the midst of the economic downturn in 2009, the company cut about 200 jobs globally, or roughly 6% of its workforce. It also cut executive salaries and implemented a broad-based salary freeze.

Culture

Keeping with Silicon’s Valley’s style, the dress code at Xilinx is business casual. Pet insurance is one of the more unusual perks. Employees start with three weeks vacation in addition to 10 “excused days off” a year. Xilinx has two stock awards programs and an employee stock purchase program.
