Verizon Communications Inc. is the No. 2 provider of U.S. telecommunications services. The New York-based company provides local telephone, long-distance and Internet access services to residential and business customers in 24 states and Washington, D.C.

Like its primary rival, AT&T Corp., Verizon is getting most of its growth from its wireless operations as its traditional phone business shrinks. The company eliminated 8,000 jobs in 2009 and is expected to lay off another 13,000 workers by the end of the year.

Verizon is making a push into the market for cable- and Internet-based video services, another area where it hopes to find growth.

In 2010, Verizon Communications was named one of the World’s Most Admired Companies by Fortune Magazine. That same year, Working Mother magazine named it one of the 100 Best Companies to work for, and Verizon also made that magazine’s list of Best Companies for Multicultural Women for the fourth consecutive year.

The company has 10 employee-resource groups, representing most ethnic minority groups, military veterans and LGBT employees.

Verizon offers employees several education and training programs including tuition reimbursement for bachelor's and master's degrees, on-the-job training, online development tools and training curriculums.

For the fourth consecutive year, BusinessWeek named Verizon to its list of Best Places to Launch a Career in 2010.

Verizon’s tuition assistance programs pay 100 percent of approved tuition and fees at accredited institutions of higher education, up to $8,000 per year.
