VeriSign Inc.

Overview

VeriSign Inc., based in Mountain View, Calif., provides Internet domain-name registry and security services. The company once held a near-monopoly on the business of assigning unique addresses to all computers and other devices connected to the Internet. These days, it operates two of the world's 13 root nameservers that assign these IP addresses, and it still issues most of domain names that end in .com and .net.

In addition to its registry business, VeriSign provides secure socket layer (SSL) services and digital certificates that secure online communications and transactions. VeriSign secures more than one million Web servers with digital certificates, protecting the majority of secure Web sites on the Internet, including 93% of the Fortune 500 sites.

The recent sale of its authentication business to Symantec Corp. will result in a number of layoffs. According to a MarketWatch story, the number of jobs eliminated could be as high as 1,000.

Culture

The company provides its employees with a variety of perks, such as tuition reimbursement and health club reimbursement.

Many VeriSign employees host blogs on the company's website about company events, new products, and industry trends.

The company was founded by VeriSign chairman James Bidzos, an industry pioneer who helped develop the technology that allows for secure Internet communication. Bidzos has been named one of Time Magazine's "Digital 50" and is a member of the Computer Industry Hall of Fame.
