Twitter Co-Founder Biz Stone Leaving
Twitter Inc. is losing another co-founder. Biz Stone, who helped launch the microblogging service in 2006, is leaving day-to-day work at the company, he said Tuesday.

Overview

Privately held Twitter Inc. offers a free micro-blogging and social networking service lets users answer a simple question: What are you doing right now? To communicate with their friends, or the world at large, users post short text messages -- known as "Tweets" and limited to 140 characters -- to their Twitter account from a computer or mobile device. The service has exploded, with everyone from Hollywood celebrities to professional athletes to U.S. President Barack Obama posting tweets. By early 2011, the San Francisco-based Twitter had grown to more than 200 million users tweeting 65 million times a day.

Although the company, like Google Inc., has created a new verb for the English language, it has yet to figure out how to turn a profit from its users tweeting. Twitter is well-funded, though, raising $150 million in venture capital, and it does generate some revenue by sharing users' tweets with search engines like Google and Microsoft Corp.'s Bing. Through secondary market trading, the company has earned an estimated valuation of $7.7 billion.

Culture

Twitter describes its corporate culture as a democracy. Every Friday, teams of employees get together with management and Twitter founders over food and drinks to share their latest ideas and developments.

Despite being a small company, Twitter has a generous benefits package including free breakfast and lunch and a fully-stocked kitchen at its San Francisco headquarters. Twitter, which is privately held, also offers stock options. Given the company's explosive growth, the options are of a kind that venture capitalists dream about acquiring.

Twitter has an unusual philanthropic endeavor, The Fledgling Initiative, which makes and sells wine to benefit a nonprofit literacy organization called Room to Read. Every case of Fledgling wine sold helps promote literacy for children worldwide.

You can read the company’s blogs and follow its employees tweets. And, of course, you can follow Twitter on Twitter.com.

Recruiting

Twitter is hiring rapidly through its in-house recruiting team. The company's work force grew nine-fold in 18 months, from 22 employees at the start of 2009 to 205 in 2010. The company tweets about recruiting @JoinTheFlock and expects candidates to quickly pursue job leads.
