Texas Instruments Inc. is one of the world's oldest and largest semiconductor makers. The Dallas-based company is best known for its digital signal processors (DSPs), which are found in mobile phones, DVD players, automotive systems, and computer modems. The company also makes logic chips, microprocessors, microcontrollers, and display components.

According to its website, Texas Instruments is in the Guinness Book of World Records. In 2003, the company developed the fastest digital signal processor.

Even so, Texas Instruments was hurt by the U.S. economic downturn of 2008-09 and it faces stiff competition from Freescale Semiconductor. TI, as it's sometimes called, laid off 3,400 employees in 2009.


Fortune Magazine named Texas Instruments Inc. as one of the 100 Best Companies to Work for in America in 2010. Working Mother Magazine named it one of the 100 Best Companies for Working Mothers in 2010.

The company began actively recruiting women in 2008. In 2009, 22 percent of its new hires were women.
