Tellabs Inc.

Overview

Tellabs sells networking equipment that telecom service providers use to manage voice and data traffic on their networks. It is among the leading sellers of digital cross-connect systems, which route traffic along traditional phone networks. Tellabs also sells gear that lets Internet service providers connect their networks to customers using optical switches, which can handle more capacity than electronic ones. The company operates three business segments: broadband, transport and services.

Based in Naperville, Ill., the company has operations in the U.S., the U.K., Europe, Asia-Pacific, Middle East, Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean.

Tellabs benefited from the telecom boom of the late 1990s, and its stock was one of the best performing issues in the S&P 500 Index during that decade. Early this decade, many considered it a takeover candidate for some of its larger rivals, but it's remained independent. The company recently unveiled a restrcturing plan that will result in the reduction of about 200 positions over five quarters, although it expects total headcount to rise in 2010.
