Overview

Sprint Nextel Corp., based in Overland Park, Kan., is the No. 3 wireless service provider in the U.S. The company serves nearly 40 million customers with voice, data, and Internet services over its nationwide network. Sprint Nextel also provides cellular access to other carriers and resellers on a wholesale basis.

The company is always looking to expand into new markets amid intense competition from its larger rivals, Verizon Wireless and AT&T Wireless. Sprint Nextel laid off 8,000 workers in 2009 and recently announced it was teaming up with Best Buy Inc. to help the retailer offer its own wireless internet service.

Sprint also operates a traditional wireline phone business, selling local and long-distance voice service and Internet service to businesses and consumers.

Culture

Sprint offers a range of programs to build new skills, improve on existing ones, and to create a company of individuals working together toward a common goal. For two consecutive years, Training Magazine has ranked Sprint in its annual ranking of top 100 employee developers. Sprint Nextel was named one of the top 100 companies in BusinessWeek’s 2009 “Best Places to Launch a Career” survey. In addition, the Educational Assistance Program allows Sprint employees to advance their careers by helping fund continuing course work toward secondary education, bachelor, or graduate degrees.

Cost reductions in 2009 included a suspension of matching funds to employee 401(k) accounts, and an extension of 2008 salary freezes.
