Overview

SanDisk Corp. makes memory chips and modules used to store digital data on mobile phones, digital cameras, video cameras, gaming devices, personal computers and GPS locators. The Milpitas, Calif., company's data storage products are based on flash memory, which retains data even after its power source is turned off.

In 2009, SanDisk was tops in the market for flash-based memory cards, according to market researcher Gartner.

The company was founded by and still run by engineers. CEO and co-founder Eli Harari holds more than 100 U.S. and international technology patents. In 2009 he received the the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers' Robert N. Noyce Medal recognizing his leadership in the development and commercialization of flash memory technology.

Culture

Founder Eli Harari has a reputation for considering SanDisk employees as extended family. In a recent profile, SanDisk general counsel Jim Brelsford said, "The company is his extended family. He loves it, and you see it. Brelsford credited Harari for the company's low turnover rate, especially among its engineers.
