Overview

Red Hat Inc. is the leading seller of software and services for Linux, the open-source computer operating system that is the main rival to Microsoft Corp.'s Windows. While the stripped-down version of Linux is free, Red Hat sells a suite of enhanced products for PCs and servers that provide its corporate customers with software support and maintenance. The Raleigh, N.C., company also sells database software, collaboration applications, development tools and embedded operating systems.

Red Hat recently rolled out new services and development tools that make it easier for customers to use Linux on remote Internet servers, an IT-systems approach known as cloud computing.

When Red Hat's stock began trading in 1999, its first-day price gain was among the highest ever, turning many early Red Hat employees into millionaires -- at least on paper.

Recruiting

Red Hat employees produce The Show, an internal video update that helps to spread the word about all the great things happening at Red Hat. Employees from around the globe get updates on new products, projects, and initiatives in a more dynamic format than email or web pages. Each episode features a new "12 seconds with..." section. You might see 12 seconds with technology or an uncut session with some of our interns. Ironically, the "12 seconds with..." section usually ends up being closer to 30 seconds long.
