Qwest Communications International Inc.

Overview

Qwest Communications International Inc., based in Denver, is a telecommunications carrier providing voice, data, video and Internet service to more than 10 million consumers and businesses in 14 states in the Western U.S.

Qwest began as a high-flying Internet service provider that flourished during the telecom boom of the late 1990s. Yet it struggled after the bubble burst and in the wake of its 2000 acquisition of US West, the smallest of the surviving Bell phone companies at the time. In 2005, Qwest tried but failed to acquire MCI Corp., a long distance provider that was snapped up instead by Qwest's larger rival, Verizon Communications Inc.

CenturyTel Inc. recently agreed to buy Qwest for $10.6 billion in stock, after Qwest had been looking to sell part or all of its business for some time. CenturyTel plans to maintain its own headquarters in Monroe, La., but will also have a key operational presence in Denver.

Culture

For employees who have been with the company more than six months, Qwest pays a portion of the legal costs associated with adopting a child. It has a volunteer program called Qwest Pioneers in which employees volunteer in local communities. Career development includes access to more than 3,500 online courses.
