Qualcomm Inc. pioneered the wireless communication technology known as CDMA, short for code division multiple access, which has become the standard for cell-phone chips in North America. The San Diego-based company licenses the technology to other wireless-chip makers and sells CDMA-related products and services to most of the world's largest makers of mobile handsets.

Qualcomm operates four business segments: Qualcomm CDMA Technologies, Qualcomm Technology Licensing, Qualcomm Wireless & Internet, and Qualcomm Strategic Initiatives. Headquartered in San Diego, Calif., the company has 126 locations throughout the world.

Qualcomm is expanding beyond its core market for cell-phone chips with a new technology for viewing video content on mobile devices. Known as the augmented-reality approach, it involves superimposing computer-generated content over live images viewed through cameras on cellphones or other devices.

Qualcomm operates in more than 120 countries. As it has pushed into the European market, it has faced intense competition from Nokia Corp., its largest rival. The two have squared off in the courtroom, and Qualcomm is also facing an antitrust investigation by the European Commission based on a complaint from a U.K. wireless chip company alleging that Qualcomm has engaged in anticompetitive activity. The complaint comes within months after the EU body withdrew its previous four-year antitrust probe of Qualcomm's alleged monopoly abuses.
