Overview

PMC-Sierra Inc. has developed nearly 400 semiconductor devices used in communications and networking equipment. Its products are designed for corporations and other large enterprises.

The Santa Clara, Calif., company was founded in 1984 as Sierra Semiconductor. In 1996, Sierra Semi exited the personal computer modem chipset business and began to focus on networking chips.

The company’s clients include Alcatel-Lucent, Cisco Systems Inc. and Hewlett-Packard Co. The company has not had layoffs since 2007, when it eliminated roughly 200 jobs.

Culture

PMC-Sierra employees enjoy participating in a variety of sports, from ice hockey and golf in North America to cricket in India and rafting in Israel. According to its website, the company organizes a number of employee events, including holiday parties, movie nights, cook-offs, and summer picnics.
