Overview

Paychex Inc. processes the payrolls of about 550,000 clients, making it the second-largest payroll accounting firm in the U.S. after Automatic Data Processing Inc. The Rochester, N.Y., company also provides automatic tax payment, direct deposit and wage garnishment processing. Its Paychex Business Solutions offers 401(k) record keeping, risk management, benefits administration, and group insurance management.

Paychex was founded by B. Thomas Golisano, who launched the company in 1971 with just one employee. That small operation grew to include 18 franchises and partnerships, which were eventually consolidated into one private company in 1979. In 1983, Paychex went public.

CEO Jonathan Judge recently stepped down after nearly six years.

Paychex Inc. boasts a culture of healthy lifestyles. The Paychex Active Health program, now in its third year, supports and rewards employees for making a healthy lifestyle a priority. Well over 80% of Paychex’s 12,000 employees voluntarily participate in the nationwide program. Recruiting

During the interview process, in addition to asking questions about your work experiences and skills listed on your resume, you will be asked several behavioral-based questions. Examples of such questions are as follows: Describe a situation when you saw room for improvement in a task you were required to complete. What did you do? Did you present your idea?

Paychex administers a timed arithmetic-reasoning test to all candidates. This test features mathematical equations, word problems, and exercises in sequential thinking. It is only used as one piece of information in the selection process. Depending on the position you are applying for, Paychex may administer additional testing to evaluate your job skills.
