Overstock’s work environment is casual rather than corporate. CEO Patrick Byrne is vocal and passionate about his causes, including philanthropic endeavors, all of which are highlighted on the company’s Web site. Byrne is known for his vehement opposition to naked short selling, a type of speculative stock sale which Byrne has blamed for sharp drops in Overstock.com's share price. Under his direction, Overstock.com has filed lawsuits alleging improper acts by Wall Street firms, a hedge fund, and an independent research firm.
