Overview

Salt Lake City-based Overstock.com Inc. is an online retailer offering closeout and discount brand and non-brand name merchandise, including bed-and-bath goods, home décor, kitchenware, watches, jewelry, electronics and computers, sporting goods, apparel and designer accessories, among other products. It also operates as part of its website an online auctions business as well as online sites for listing cars and real estate for sale.

In 2009, the company launched O.biz, a Web site where customers can shop for bulk and business related items.

Culture

Overstock’s work environment is casual rather than corporate. CEO Patrick Byrne is vocal and passionate about his causes, including philanthropic endeavors, all of which are highlighted on the company’s Web site. Byrne is known for his vehement opposition to naked short selling, a type of speculative stock sale which Byrne has blamed for sharp drops in Overstock.com's share price. Under his direction, Overstock.com has filed lawsuits alleging improper acts by Wall Street firms, a hedge fund, and an independent research firm.
