Overview

Based in Sunnyvale, Calif., NetApp Inc. sells hardware and software that help large corporations store and manage computer data. Once called Network Appliance, the company burst onto the scene in the mid-1990s with a pioneering storage technology that led to explosive sales growth. Many of its earliest employees got rich as the company's stock price soared during the tech boom.

As NetApp has grown to serve larger customers, it's faced greater competition from much-bigger rivals such as EMC Corp. and Hewlett-Packard Co. Like other computer-storage companies, its business has shifted more toward selling software, which carries higher profit margins than hardware sales.

NetApp markets and sells its products directly through its worldwide sales force and indirectly through computer-system integrators, distributors, original equipment manufacturers and strategic business partners.

Like most technology companies, NetApp's business suffered amid the recent global recession, and it laid off 6% of its work force in 2009. In 2010, the company acquired Bycast Inc., a maker of software used to manage large video and image files.

NetApp Inc. consistently ranks as one of the 100 Best Companies To Work For in Fortune magazine’s annual rankings, which has cited its egalitarian culture, among other things.

The company promotes work/life balance. On site, you’ll find volleyball, ping pong and foosball tables. You can take yoga classes and dine at one of it gourmet cafes. A volunteer time-off program awards each employee five days off a year to volunteer with pay to support the nonprofit organizations or schools of their choice.

Recruiting

Expect a phone interview first and as many as four to 10 in-person interviews depending on the job. The company uses behavioral interviewing techniques, which base questions on real examples from a candidate's past, rather than on hypothetical scenarios. Wear business casual and include keywords on your resume and don't worry about it fitting to one page.
