Motorola Inc.

Overview

Headquartered in Schaumburg, Ill., Motorola Inc. sells communication products and services to businesses, consumers and telecommunication service providers. With operations around the world, it is one of the top manufacturers of mobile phones. Its products include wireless phones and accessories, digital entertainment devices, cable set-top boxes and video distribution systems, analog and digital two-way radios and wireless and wireline networking equipment.

Motorola led the design shift in the mobile-handset market toward thinner, sleeker phones, and it gained share with its Razr product and similar models. But it had to play catch-up when Apple Inc., Nokia Corp. and others released all-in-one devices that could be used to make calls, play music, access the Internet and read email. Recently it's been making a push to acquire technology for delivering video content over the Internet.

Motorola recently announced it would separate into two independent, publicly traded companies in 2011. One will include the company’s Mobile Devices and Home units and the other its Enterprise Mobility Solutions and Networks businesses.

Culture

Motorola affectionately refers to its employees as Motorolans and describes its culture as entrepreneurial. In the 1980s, Motorola developed Six Sigma, a business-management strategy that adopted a martial-arts ranking system to define organizational hierarchy. Employees are mentored and challenged by in-house coaches of higher rank.

The company has a corporate-responsibility program, which includes reducing carbon emissions. The Motorola Foundation focuses worldwide on education, communities and the environment.

Recruiting

Motorola seeks out engineering majors and business majors and offers internships and actively recruits on college campuses. The company has several employee-network groups including an Asian, Black, Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgender, Latino, People with Disabilities and Women’s Business councils. The councils focus on brand awareness and marketing, community involvement, retention and recruitment, and personal and professional development. Flexible work arrangements are available through its iWork program, which lets employees work from an alternate site, alternate schedules, go part time or participate in job sharing.
