Maxim Integrated Products Inc., founded in 1983, makes thousands of different analog and mixed-signal integrated circuits, with more than 80% of its computer-chip products invented by the company. The Sunnyvale, Calif., company makes amplifiers, data converters, transceivers, and switching integrated circuits.

The company's products are used by thousands of electronics manufacturers in making computers and peripheral gear, appliances, medical devices, instruments, and utility meters.

The company laid off 172 employees in 2009.
