Overview

Linear Technology Corp. makes analog and mixed-signal integrated circuits for cell phones, computers, automotive electronics, defense systems and other products. It also supplies chips to high-end consumer products including Apple Inc.’s iPad. Headquartered in Milpitas, Calif., it has locations in Arizona, Colorado, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, North Carolina, Texas, Vermont and Washington. Overseas it has operations in Germany and Singapore.

During the height of the economic downturn that began in 2008, Linear Tech, as it's sometimes called, reduced its workforce by approximately 10%. It also cut base pay and profit sharing bonuses.

Culture

The work environment is Silicon Valley casual. A substantial chunk of workers' pay comes via profit-sharing bonuses, which are paid out in January and July. In the past five years, Linear Tech's profit-sharing percentage has ranged from 29% to 68% of an employee's semi-annual base pay. An employee stock purchase plan is also available.

Longevity is rewarded. After five years of continuous employment, employees are eligible to take six weeks of sabbatical leave.

Recruiting

Engineers at its Vermont hub have an average of 17 years' experience. Linear maintains that it is always looking for senior level, analog and mixed-signal IC designers for its Grass Valley, Calif., operations. The company also hires at the entry level and actively recruits on college campuses.
