Lam Research Corp. designs and manufactures equipment used to make and prepare the silicon wafers from which computer chips are cut. Its technology offerings include semiconductor plasma etching and single-wafer clean products.

Headquartered in Freemont, Calif., Lam has operations in North America, Europe and in Asia, where it does much of its business.The company also provides its customers with equipment upgrades and technical training.

In the economic downturn in 2009, Lam cut its workforce by almost 25%, to 2,700 from 3,700. It also temporarily cut pay for its remaining employees.

Employees with five or more years at Lam Research are eligible for six-week paid sabbaticals. Lam is generous with education assistance, reimbursing employees up to $10,000 a year for career-related courses. It also offers adoption aid and wellness programs.
