Overview

Based in Sunnyvale, Calif., Juniper Networks Inc. makes networking gear for telecommunication service providers, businesses and public-sector customers. Juniper is the largest of the half-dozen or so networking upstarts founded in the 1990s to take on market giant Cisco Systems Inc. Its routers and switches help speed data along private networks and over the Internet.

Its operations are organized into two segments: infrastructure equipment and service-layer technologies, which help IT pros manage complicated networks. It has locations offices in nearly 50 countries.

Juniper recently teamed up with Polycom Inc., which makes video-conferencing systems, to jointly sell their products.

Culture

A fierce rivalry with its larger Silicon Valley competitor Cisco Systems Inc. is baked into Juniper's corporate DNA.
