Overview

Garmin Ltd. manufactures navigation products that use global positioning system technology to wirelessly deliver geographic location data through satellite communications. Its portable products incorporate electronic maps and navigational charts. Garmin also makes communications devices that combine cellular and GPS technology.

Garmin’s products serve automotive, mobile, wireless, outdoor recreation, marine, aviation, and original-equipment manufacturer applications. Boat maker Ranger and Piper Aircraft incorporate Garmin equipment into their products.

The company was founded by Gary Burrell and Min Kao in 1989. Garmin is a combination of their names.

In April 2010, T-Mobile USA Inc. released the Garminfone, the first Android-powered smartphone with Garmin’s navigation technology. The Garminfone is a full-touch 3G smartphone with a 3.5-inch screen. The company recently completed the transfer of its place of incorporation to Switzerland from the Cayman Islands.
