Overview

EMC Corp. has long been the world's largest maker of products used to store data on corporate computer systems. As the company's sales growth began to slow a decade ago, EMC began to shift its focus away from hardware toward software. To attack new markets, it went on an acquisition spree that included snapping up well-known software companies such as RSA Security Inc. and Documentum and drive-maker Iomega. In 2004, it bought VMware, the leader of the fast-growing market for data virtualization software, now one of EMC's two main lines of business. More recently, it bought Mozy, which lets consumers and small businesses back up data files over the Internet.

Headquartered in Hopkinton, Mass., EMC has operations in North and South America, Europe, the Middle East, Asia-Pacific and Africa.

EMC hired 800 new workers in the first quarter of 2010 and expects to add an additional 2,000 jobs worldwide by the end of the year. Only 300 of the company's 14,000 developer/engineers are focused on hardware, according to a 2010 interview of CEO Joe Tucci.

The company recently agreed to pay $87.5 million to the U.S. government to settle charges that it misrepresented its commercial pricing practices and engaged in a kickback scheme designed to influence the government to buy the company’s products. EMC denied any liability for the allegations made in the case.

Culture

EMC emphasizes training and career growth. Mentoring programs and continued learning classes are available. Training, a trade magazine, recognized EMC in 2008 and 2009 as one of the top-ranked tech companies for employee development.

Perks include flexible work schedules, commuter and work-at-home benefits, on-site cafeterias and fitness centers and college admission coaching for employees’ children.

The company uses an internal social media platform, called EMC|ONE, to help employees communicate with one another.

Recruiting

EMC tweets about new job postings, has a Facebook page dedicated to recruiting and posts YouTube videos related to careers at the company. The company recruits heavily on college campuses and also offers paid internships. An interview guide on its careers portal gives sample questions such as how a candidate perceived a problem before it occurred.
