Dell's Acquisition of Compellent Will Not Affect Employees, Execs
Dell has offered employment to all 490 Compellent employees and has signed contracts to retain the company's management team, officials from both companies said on a conference call Monday.

Dell Inc. is one of the world's largest makers of personal computers. In addition to desktop and laptop PCs, the Round Rock, Texas, company also sells computer servers, data storage systems, printers, displays and other accessories, software and services.

Dell grew from a one-man business operated out of founder Michael Dell's dorm room into a global giant thanks to the company's build-to-order strategy, which kept costs down. Dell handed over the company's reins in 2004, planning to serve only as chairman. But when Dell began losing market share to its chief rival, Hewlett-Packard Co., he returned as CEO in 2007.

The company sells its products mainly through its website,, and through its telephone-sales operations. It also has a direct-sales force.

Dell's careers page is jam-packed with employee testimonials, including what to expect from working at Dell and misconceptions of the company. Clare, a senior development manager, said, "The biggest misconception about Dell is that we don’t do development. While it’s true we OEM elements of a solution (where it makes sense), there is a lot of development work here. To name a few areas: mechanical, board design, BIOS, firmware, and server management applications. For example, the last firmware project my team implemented was [100,000] lines of new C code."

Dell provides several formal and informal learning programs that target individual development. Topics include sales, technical support or manufacturing, communications skills, and more. Dell also provides interactive orientation sessions for new employees, and working sessions for new managers.

Dell encourages employees to pursue opportunities at Dell's offices around the globe, including locations throughout Europe and Asia.
