Overview

Corning Inc. designs and manufactures glass and ceramic materials used in a wide range of industrial, consumer and scientific products. Formerly called Corning Glass Works and known mostly for its Pyrex brand of cookware, the company changed its name in 1989 and began shifting more resources toward high-tech product development.

Corning invented the world's first fiber optic cable, and its product is now used in most of the world's telecommunications networks.

After thriving during the telecom boom of the late 1990s, Corning's optical business began to suffer as some of its largest customers either reduced the pace of their network expansion or, in the case of Nortel Networks, filed for bankruptcy. Corning laid off 3,500 employees in 2009.

Culture

Corning is headquartered in a town named after it, Corning, N.Y., and it still has a strong connection to its roots. Corning recently dished out close to $25 million through its annual GoalSharing program, given to 4,400 employees in the greater Corning area. The payout averaged just over 7% of each employee’s base salary. James R. Houghton, a descendant of the founder, served as chairman from 2001 to 2007, remains on the company's board.
