Overview

Automatic Data Processing Inc., based in Roseland, N.J., is one of the world's largest payroll and tax-filing processors. ADP also provides accounting services, employment background checks, desktop applications support, employee training and development services and auto collision estimates for insurers.

Originally named Automatic Payrolls Inc., the company was founded in 1949 in Patterson, N.J. Its first full-time salesman was future U.S. Senator Frank Lautenberg.

Forbes magazine named ADP’s Gary Butler its No. 1 Chief Executive for 2009, ranking him above notable CEOs such as Steve Jobs of Apple Inc., Robert Iger of Walt Disney Co. and Ian Cook of Colgate-Palmolive. The magazine selected its Top 25 CEOs for keeping their companies afloat and thriving despite the recession in 2009.

Culture

ADP achieved a 100 percent rating in the 2010 Corporate Equality Index report. The report is compiled by the Human Rights Campaign Foundation, which rates businesses annually on their treatment of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender employees.

The company has a number of association partnerships including: the National Sales Network, the National Association of Black Accountants, the Women’s Business Enterprise National Council, and the Women in Technology International forum.
