Overview

Atmel Corp., makes semiconductors used in a wide variety of products and industries, including touch-screen displays, automobile microcontrollers and wireless components. Its technologies include advanced logic, mixed-signal, nonvolatile memory and radio frequency components. Headquartered in San Jose, Calif., Atmel operates in more than 40 countries across North America, Europe and Asia.

Atmel sold its SmartCard business in 2010 to French company Inside Contactless SA. Atmel also announced a settlement of the remaining claims in a long-running lawsuit involving stock option backdating. The company had previously settled claims against a number of present and former employees, officers and directors derived from the company's improper accounting of stock options.

In 2009, during the height of the recession Atmel reduced its workforce, including an 11% cut in North America. In late 2008, Microchip Technology Inc. and ON Semiconductor Corp. withdrew joint bids to acquire Atmel.
