Overview

Applied Materials Inc. has long been the world's biggest supplier of machines that make digital computer chips. In recent years, the Silicon Valley giant has pushed into new technologies and markets. Through acquisitions and internal development, it now also sells tools used in manufacturing nanotechnology and flat-panel displays, photovoltaic cells and solar panels.

Applied divides its business operations into four segments: Silicon, Applied Global Services, Display and Energy, and Environmental Solutions. Headquartered in Santa Clara, Calif., it has 92 locations in 21 countries including China, Germany, Israel, Singapore, Switzerland and Taiwan.

In 2009, Applied acquired Semitool Inc. which produces electrochemical deposition and associated wafer-surface preparation solutions.

Culture

Recruiting

Applied heavily recruits ex-military personnel and on college campuses. It also offers internships. The company offers a detailed list of tips on what to expect when interviewing, including being prepared for questions about a long-term goal that you have set for yourself, your experience working on a team with people from different backgrounds or cultures, and other questions that will assess your technical knowledge.
