Agilent Technologies Inc.

Overview

Agilent Technologies Inc. makes specialized test and measurement equipment that analyzes everything from DNA to sound waves. Until 1999, when it was spun off as an independent company, it was the unit of Hewlett-Packard Co. that included H-P's original measurement-device business. Agilent now provides equipment for two main markets: electronics makers and bio-analytical laboratories.

Headquartered in Santa Clara, Calif., the company has operations in the U.S. and in Australia, China, Germany, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore and the U.K.

The global economic downturn forced Agilent to restructure some operations, cut its work force and close businesses. To boost profits, it agreed to merge with rival Varian Inc. in a $1.5 billion transaction. In 2010, the U.S. Federal Trade Commission approved the deal after the combined company agreed to sell three product lines.

Culture

Agilent offers its employees a range of health and fitness programs that vary by office location and include on-site massage, yoga classes, fitness rooms and outdoor sports facilities. Workers can also join sports leagues, clubs and activities, including a symphony orchestra.

Agilent inherited Hewlett-Packard Co.'s employee-friendly culture. It has an employee stock-purchase plan and allows flexible schedules and telecommuting. The company also supports philanthropy by providing employees up to four hours of paid time off per month to volunteer with Agilent-sponsored or supported community activities.

You can follow Agilent on Twitter and on Facebook.

Recruiting

The company's interview process includes behavioral and technical questions, as well as meeting with several different people, sometimes in small groups. Agilent has a Twitter account and Facebook page dedicated to careers. The company recruits heavily on college campuses.
