Advanced Micro Devices Inc. is the second-largest maker of microprocessor chips that run PCs and servers after its giant rival, Intel Corp.AMD, as it's known in its industry, manufactures two popular lines of PC and server processors, called Athlon and Opteron.

The Sunnyvale, Calif.-based company also makes embedded processors and other chips for communications and networking applications. AMD's biggest customer is No. 1 PC maker Hewlett-Packard Co.

In 2009, AMD joined GLOBALFOUNDRIES to break ground on a semiconductor manufacturing facility in upstate New York, fulfilling AMD's goal of bringing a chip-fabrication facility to the U.S.

AMD was named one of the Best 100 Corporate Citizens of 2010 by Corporate Responsibility Officer Magazine. Newsweek named AMD one of the Top 20 Greenest Companies of 2009. AMD encourages employees to get involved in a company program, AMD Changing the Game, which funds seven nonprofit organizations for youth development; sponsors a video contest that explores the intersection of education and gaming; and co-sponsors the Games for Change Festival in New York City.
