Overview

Akamai Technologies Inc. sells hardware and services that help corporations and other large enterprises deliver Internet traffic over their networks more efficiently. Using more than 60,000 Internet servers in 70 countries, the Cambridge, Mass., company analyzes and manages data and applications for high-profile customers including Apple Inc., the U.S. Department of Defense, BlackBerry maker Research in Motion Ltd., and video-rental provider Netflix Inc.

Akamai was named one of the 25 fastest-growing U.S. companies in 2009 by Forbes Magazine. The company was also included in Bloomberg Businessweek’s 2010 ranking of the 50 top-performing stocks over the past five years.

Culture

Akamai was founded in 1998 by a group of students and a professor at the Massachussetts Institute of Technology. The company's name means "intelligent" in Hawaiian, and Akamai corporate culture includes a large number of serious-minded scientists and mathematicians. One co-founder, MIT applied mathematics professor Tom Leighton, still serves as Akamai's Chief Scientist. Another co-founder, Daniel Lewin, was killed aboard American Airlines Flight 11 during the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.
