Akamai was founded in 1998 by a group of students and a professor at the Massachussetts Institute of Technology. The company's name means "intelligent" in Hawaiian, and Akamai corporate culture includes a large number of serious-minded scientists and mathematicians. One co-founder, MIT applied mathematics professor Tom Leighton, still serves as Akamai's Chief Scientist. Another co-founder, Daniel Lewin, was killed aboard American Airlines Flight 11 during the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.
